Podcast: Apocalypse part 8 – A Nice Day for a White Wedding

apocalypseThis is the eighth sermon in our series on Revelation, which is called, “Apocalypse: John’s Visions, Our Decisions.” This sermon was on 19:6-9, and it was a part of a combined worship service that followed a wedding theme.  During this worship time we focused on the wedding of the Lamb and the church, and part of our worship time involved welcoming in 2 new members.  The main idea found in the sermon is the grace of God found in Jesus Christ.  We don’t deserve to be dressed in fine white linen, as the bride, but because of Jesus’ sacrifice for us we are offered this as a gift of grace.

Podcast: Apocalypse part 7 – A Christmas Apocalypse

apocalypseThis is the seventh sermon in our series on Revelation, which is called, “Apocalypse: John’s Visions, Our Decisions.” This sermon was on 12:1-9, and it dealt with a the Christmas story as found in Revelation. We sang Christmas songs in order to get in the proper mood to consider what John had for us in this vision about the birth of the Messiah amidst a cosmic battle.  As you see the Christmas story differently, then perhaps it can help you see your life differently.  John’s visions push us in our decisions to act faithfully with Christ as Lord.

Podcast: Apocalypse part 6 – Weeping or Rejoicing

apocalypseThis is the sixth sermon in our series on Revelation, which is called, “Apocalypse: John’s Visions, Our Decisions.” This sermon was on 18:11-20, and it is the message that goes along with our stewardship Sunday.  One of the biggest themes that runs throughout Revelation is the call away from idolatry.  If we understand idols as things that compete for our hearts and take the place of ultimate allegiance in our lives, as opposed to God, then money can certainly be an idol.  What does this section of Revelation teach us on this?  After I spoke there are some things that are not on the audio.  First, April Burt, spoke about her experiences in Mission Year where she lived in Atlanta and ministered to and with people.  After that we had communion and focused on what we already have been given.  Finally, we had the opportunity to give our offerings and pledges on the altar.

Podcast: Apocalypse part 5 – Witnesses

apocalypseThis is the fifth sermon in our series on Revelation, which is called, “Apocalypse: John’s Visions, Our Decisions.” This sermon was on 11:1-13, and it focused on the vision of the two witnesses found there.  I picked up where we left off, in a sense, last week.  If we have those questions of “how long?” and place our faith in the return of Christ and his Lordship, then what do we do about now?  Does our faithfulness matter today?  What is God doing in and through his people today? The Old Testament references are from Isaiah 6:13 and Amos 5:3 as well as 1 Kings 19:18. The other New Testament reading we had Sunday was from 2 Peter 3:8 and following.  If you are curious and want to learn more about the symbolism behind the two witnesses, feel free to join us for the Revelation Bible study on Wednesdays at either 1:00 or 6:30.

Podcast: Apocalypse part 4 – How Long?

apocalypseThis is the fourth sermon in our series on Revelation, which is called, “Apocalypse: John’s Visions, Our Decisions.” This sermon was from 6:9-11, and it centered on the martyrs under the altar crying out “how long?”  Is there a time to raise this sort of question to God?  How should we handle these things as a church?  What would it mean for us to “do” this text today?
