Thoughts after the elections

20161109_122711Going into Election Day 2016, I was convinced that scriptural believing Christianity is a minority worldview in our country. I continue to be of that opinion. And it’s not because I’m a democrat – I’m actually a small government, social conservative, so I have no party. I voted for a lot of people who lost yesterday. Just like I have done for the past several years. I’m used to my guys/gals losing politically. But here is the thing: politics is not my primary identity. My political leaning does not define who I am. I hope that my faith does. And, as I stated in a sermon several weeks ago, the simple fact that we had the two major party candidates for President that we did, was further evidence that our country is not a “Christian nation.” In fact, it holds our values in contempt. I continue to believe that, and I knew that the day after the election would feel this way for me, because I knew that, regardless of who won, I was going to have a President with whom I very deeply disagreed.

Not everyone was prepared for this eventuality, apparently. So, to my Democratic leaning brothers and sisters in Christ, please remember, scriptural Christianity is a minority worldview in our country. That fact remains true. This is what it feels like. To my Republican leaning brothers and sisters in Christ, please remember your Christian values, and that they remain a minority in our country, even if your party won. Your identity should not be primarily political. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Yesterday I tweeted

This is still the case. Our faithful living matters. Ours is never a political victory – and it is best for both sides of the aisle to remember that. And then to remember it again in two years during the midterm elections. And then again in four years… Scriptural Christianity is a minority worldview in our country. Now, for American Christians, in this fractured country, now is the time to live Jesus shaped lives. Demonstrate with your lives that it is not about political power, but about the life that Jesus Christ brings. Demonstrate with your love a different message in our vitriol filled culture. And be prepared to lose, and suffer, because this world is not the Kingdom of God. Not yet. But one day, our King will come.

  1. Andy, I read your blog and those are my thoughts exactly. I am so looking forward to King Jesus ruling in the new kingdom, but until then I will faithfully live out my life to bring honor and glory to him. I hope that faith is defines who I am as well. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Thanks, Pastor Andy, for putting into words the muddled up notions I had in my head and for reminding us that our Lord Jesus is in charge and we need to be a living lesson of His Love for all- even those who disagree with us. Praying for our nation and God’s wonderful creation, our earth an all its people.
