Podcast: Alive part 1 – Restoration

This is my first sermon of the Easter season – where we will examine the implications of the resurrection on us today.  The reading is from John 21:1-19, the story of Jesus asking Peter three times if he loves him (among other things).  This is a great gospel story with a powerful message about grace and God’s forgiveness.  The forgiveness and restoration that Jesus offers us is amazing.

Podcast update and some links

This week we had a guest speaker at Carson City UMC – Tammy McDonald from “Saved by God’s Grace” ministries.  Tammy gave her testimony on how she and her husband, Chuck, were called into missionary work in Kenya to care for orphans and build a church.  Tammy’s testimony was amazing and it was striking to hear her humanity in the midst of God’s calling.  Tammy and Chuck had retirement dreams of building up a nest egg and traveling the country together.  They were not a couple who refrained from giving.  They were generous.  But God had more in mind for them, and that “more” involved Kenya.  Read more about the McDonald’s on their website here.

In Memoriam

This past Monday Michael Spencer passed away.  He was 53.  I never met him, but often read his blog and even more often listened to his podcasts.  It feels strange to be mourning for someone I never met, but I feel pretty sad about the whole thing.  The way he wrote connected with me, and with many others (as it turns out).  I browse some blogs – but not many at all anymore.  However, Michael’s was one I paid attention to.

I guess the thing that strikes me the most is the senselessness of the loss.  I have seen this too often.  He was young.  He had a family.  He was contributing in a meaningful way by teaching and being a chaplain for a Baptist School in the Appalachian Mountains that served as a missionary outpost as much as anything.  His ministry was far from over as far as being fruitful and effective.  His writings on the internet made his blog one of the top Christian blogs out there, and it constantly provided insight, honesty, grace, and encouragement for many Christians who were struggling with how to live out their faith in a crazy world.  A couple of times I had an email written to him that I deleted.  It would sound too silly, I thought.  He probably gets too many of these things, I told myself.  I had just wanted to tell him thank you and encourage him in what he was doing, but I didn’t.  And now I wish I would have.

Here is one of the pieces that Michael wrote that stands out most in my memory.

Podcast – Easter Sermon 2010

Here is the sermon for Easter Sunday.  In the bulletin I titled it, “This Changes Everything,” but I’m not sure that’s a good title.  Perhaps just “Resurrection” would work better.  Anyway, it’s launched from the resurrection account in Luke 24:1-12.  I really do love Easter, and I love coming off of the Holy Week worship into Easter Sunday.  This sermon will launch our new sermon series on being resurrection people called “Alive.”  I hope to focus on what it means to live out our faith in light of the resurrection and the life Christ offers us.

Lenten Journey – Day 45

Well, I’m writing this at about 9:30 pm on Good Friday, which means I’ve almost made it to the end of this fast. Tomorrow evening, after the Easter vigil, where we’ll begin to celebrate Easter, baptize 5 people, and welcome 3 more into membership, I’ll break my fast. I began it on Ash Wednesday when the ashes were imposed on my head. I’ll end it with communion tomorrow night. Wow.

I really meant to blog today about last evening’s worship and didn’t get a chance to, and now it’s after the Good Friday service as well. It’s been a crazy and amazing two days. I absolutely love Holy Week. I’ve also been pretty weak at different spots during these two days, so I’ve really had to pace myself and rest occasionally. Let me begin with Thursday.
