Giving thanks

thanksgivingThanksgiving is here. I have seen some people through the month of November write something each day that they are thankful for, and I thought that was a pretty good thing to do, but I didn’t do it myself. However, I think it would be appropriate for me to share what I am thankful for.
I am thankful to God for the salvation he gave me through Jesus Christ and the peace I’ve received through the Holy Spirit. In Jesus Christ I not only find forgiveness, peace, meaning, and purpose, but also I have hope. I hope for and long for the day when God’s kingdom will come and his will is done on earth as it is in heaven. One of the things I have taught and preached about often is that things are not now the way they ought to be. I love doing that because then I don’t have to pretend that everything is ok. But there is more. I have within me a deep hope for the day when everything is the way it ought to be. I long for that time. I am thankful for that. Continue Reading »

Podcast: Kingdoms Collide

Christ_the_KingOur sermon for Christ the King Sunday comes from John 18:33-38. Christ’s Kingdom is not from this world, which means that it does not originate from this world. Christ’s Kingdom has different values than the values of the world’s kingdoms. So, what does that mean for you and I today? What would being a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven look like in your life?

Revelation Bible Study Session 11

ApocalypseScreenThis week we covered Revelation 21 and 22.  These are the most hope filled chapters of the book, but they are ones that have their full effect after having read through the first 20 chapters.  In 21-22 we see what the victory of God looks like, and we get a glimpse of visions of life without evil – which includes no more death, sickness, and mourning.  I am including the handout we used for notes – here.  This is the last session that I’ll post.  The final session of the Bible study was more of a conversation where we had discussion over snacks in the fellowship hall.  Thanks for your interest and hopefully these online postings of the sessions have been helpful.

Revelation Bible Study Session 10

ApocalypseScreenThis week we covered Revelation 19 and 20. These chapters focus on the victory of Christ and the defeat and final judgment of the forces of evil – one at a time they are disposed of.  We also deal a little bit with the Millennium in chapter 20.  There were a couple of handouts for the class that I’ll put online.  The first is the notes for this session.  The second is the long awaited piece on “Wrath and Choas” in Revelation and a way to think about that.

Podcast: Apocalypse part 11: New

apocalypseThis is the eleventh sermon in our series on Revelation, which is called, “Apocalypse: John’s Visions, Our Decisions.” This sermon is from chapter 21:1-8, and it centers around God saying, “Behold, I make all things new.”  I’ll put up the pictures I refer to – the snow covered tree here, and the blooming tree here.  Finally, I”ll place a link to the David Bentley Hart book up here as well.
