Temporary and eternal

hummingbirdOur hummingbirds have left. At least I’m pretty sure they have. The males stopped coming to the feeder first, and now it’s been several days since I’ve seen the females. Fall is here, and this is one of the signs of the changing seasons. I love the fall, but I’m sad to see the hummingbirds leave. This is life though, isn’t it? The seasons of our lives change as time marches forward.
As a part of our Revelation bible study, I have been praying a prayer that matches up with some of the things we study in Revelation. The prayer is this: “Grant me, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while I am placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.” There is a contrast in the prayer between those things that pass away and those things that are eternal. Continue Reading »

Podcast: Apocalypse part 5 – Witnesses

apocalypseThis is the fifth sermon in our series on Revelation, which is called, “Apocalypse: John’s Visions, Our Decisions.” This sermon was on 11:1-13, and it focused on the vision of the two witnesses found there.  I picked up where we left off, in a sense, last week.  If we have those questions of “how long?” and place our faith in the return of Christ and his Lordship, then what do we do about now?  Does our faithfulness matter today?  What is God doing in and through his people today? The Old Testament references are from Isaiah 6:13 and Amos 5:3 as well as 1 Kings 19:18. The other New Testament reading we had Sunday was from 2 Peter 3:8 and following.  If you are curious and want to learn more about the symbolism behind the two witnesses, feel free to join us for the Revelation Bible study on Wednesdays at either 1:00 or 6:30.

Revelation Bible Study: Session 5

ApocalypseScreenMore Revelation Bible study! Here is the lecture from chapters 8, 9, and 10. This begins with examining the 7th seal and then the first 6 trumpet judgments.  There was a handout that we used to visualize what was happening in the seals and trumpet judgments – and using this handout I observed some patterns.  Here it is.  Also, at the end we had a brief discussion on what it would mean for these judgments to suggest that we are a part of a new Exodus.  Hopefully you are seeing some of the connections between the exodus and Revelation.

Podcast: Apocalypse part 4 – How Long?

apocalypseThis is the fourth sermon in our series on Revelation, which is called, “Apocalypse: John’s Visions, Our Decisions.” This sermon was from 6:9-11, and it centered on the martyrs under the altar crying out “how long?”  Is there a time to raise this sort of question to God?  How should we handle these things as a church?  What would it mean for us to “do” this text today?

Revelation Bible Study: Session 4

ApocalypseScreenHere’s some more from our Revelation Bible study.  I’ve included most of the audio from the lecture portion of the night, which was quite a bit.  We covered chapters 6 and 7, which means for you who have the worksheets you need to be filling out the worksheet with the seals (from “Seals, Trumpets, and Bowls).  As we get into the section that deals increasingly with judgment, this quote from Craig Koester will be helpful (this is covered in lecture, but I wanted to write it out for you):

“The martyrs suffered not because they were sinners but because they were faithful. One rightly asks: Does God care? Does genuine love turn a blind eye while the wicked shed the blood of the innocent? Or is mercy another name for indifference?” Koester p.87

When we get into chapter 7 and consider the 144,000 that are sealed, this sheet may be helpful.  If you have any thoughts or comments from the class, feel free to leave them in the comments here.
