Podcast: Apocalypse part one – Four Trees

apocalypseThis is the first sermon in our series on Revelation, which is called, “Apocalypse: John’s Visions, Our Decisions.” We begin with a sermon on Revelation 22:1-7. In this message we look at four trees found in scripture – and in doing so connect Revelation with the rest of scripture. I used visuals throughout the sermon, so just listening to the message won’t give you the same effect. But, here is what the front of the church looked like at the end of moving things around during the message.

Podcast: “Locked from the Inside”

churchThis sermon addresses the question of why God sends people to hell.  It’s based on the parable in Luke 16:19-31 about the rich man and Lazarus.  Tim Keller examines this topic in more depth.  You’ll find a link to that sermon and many others here.  The one on Hell is called, “Hell: Isn’t the God of Christianity an Angry Judge?”  There are two books I’d recommend.  First is “The Great Divorce” by CS Lewis and the other is “Hell: The Logic of Damnation” by Jerry Walls, one of my professors in seminary.

Podcast: Hearing from God

churchThis sermon addresses our desire to hear from God and how we may go about that.  The scriptures we work with are found in Deuteronomy 18 and Hebrews 1:1-4.  The desire to hear from God, or the divine, or something has been pretty constant throughout human history.  How do we hear from God?

The church of the open door

door-opening-to-the-skyI’ve been studying the book of Revelation for some time now in order to prepare for a class I’m going to teach this fall.  As I studied it, I found this recurrence of doors in chapter 3 and 4, in part due to my commentary written by Craig Koester – which is a good little commentary on Revelation if you’re looking.  Anyway, I don’t think I’ll be able to use this particular collection of thoughts in the study or sermons, so I’ll post on it.

The multimillion dollar advertising campaign for the United Methodist Church used to read, “Open hearts, Open doors, Open minds.”  I found myself thinking of the “open doors” portion of our advertising slogan as I studied portions of Revelation. Continue Reading »
