Photos – Holy Saturday baptism

Here are some pictures from Holy Saturday evening. There’s a picture of me baptizing Alexandra with Anne holding her and Elijah watching, a picture of Anne and Alexandra, and a picture of Ed’s baptism. Ed was baptized on Holy Saturday as were two of his grandchildren, which was awesome. Continue Reading »

Resurrection Rebels part 1: Faith

resrebelspodThis is the first in the sermon series “Resurrection Rebels.”  In this series I am going to try to explore what it means to be a rebel of the resurrection.  This first sermon is on faith, but more specifically how a vision of faith in the resurrected Christ should change our ideas of what is possible and it should also encourage us that what we do in faith in Christ in this life won’t be wasted.  Rebels of the resurrection should be more than willing to take on causes that appear to be hopeless if they are causes that are in line with the Kingdom of God.  If you saw the resurrected Christ, as the disciples did in this scripture (John 20:19-31), how would that change your idea of what you thought was possible?  At the end of the sermon I talk a little about Compassion International.  They are an awesome ministry if you haven’t partnered with them.  I should also mention that I share a couple of testimonies of God’s work in the beginning of the message, and I hope to do that throughout Easter season.

Easter Season, the lectionary, and Holy Week

resrebelsToday I finished the graphic that I’ll use for Easter season – which, by the way, runs up until Pentecost (May 31 this year).  The series will be on “Resurrection Rebels” and will begin to play off of what we celebrated on Easter Sunday.  The basic idea is, “Jesus is risen, now what?”  How do resurrection people live?  What values define us?  As usual the scriptures used will come from the lectionary selections for the week, so let me say a word about that.  The lectionary is a collection of readings for each week of the year.  It typically contains an Old Testament, Psalm, Epistle (New Testament letter), and Gospel reading.  There are 3 year’s worth of readings, so you just go through the three year cycle.  It does not cover the entire Bible, in fact it leaves a great deal out.  It does cover all different sections of the Bible though.  I tend to use the lectionary for a few reasons.  Continue Reading »

Podcast: Rebels of the Resurrection

Easter 2009Here is the Easter Sunday sermon.  I read the resurrection account from John 20, but the message is based more upon the resurrection account found in Mark 16 (which was read earlier).  There are a couple more parts of scripture that I pull from heavily for the theology of the message and they are 1 Corinthians 15 and Revelation 21.  We had our first Sunday morning worship back in the sanctuary and celebrated Easter that way and it was awesome.  Easter should make rebels of us all.

Podcast: Naked and Unashamed

renewThis is the Palm Sunday message and it’s a meditation that I wrote a bit ago that reflects on the crucifixion and the meaning of the cross.  While I read from Isaiah 53 before the message, the meditation encompasses much of scripture, including Genesis 1-3 and the Passion narratives found in the Gospel.  I am continually challenged and inspired by God’s redeeming work.
