Podcast: Praising God

christmasThis is the sermon from the first Sunday of Christmas season. The Gospel reading is from Luke 2:22-40 and it is the story of Simeon and Anna. This sermon was preceded by April Burt sharing from her experience of being in Atlanta for Mission Year. April is doing some great work for Christ and it was great to hear from her and it is a blessing for the church to be able to support her. If you want to follow April’s journey check out her blog.

Podcast: Christmas Eve message

christmasThis is the message from our Christmas Eve services and I titled it “Bethlehem.”  We sang a lot of Christmas hymns, had communion, and read the Christmas story from Luke. It was a joy to begin the celebration of the Christmas season. The sermon is from the Christmas story in Luke 2.  Merry Christmas, and may you behold God transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Podcast: Advent week 4

This is the fourth sermon in the Advent series, “Help is Coming.” This week’s Gospel reading is from Luke 1:26-38, and it’s the announcement from Gabriel to Mary that she’ll be pregnant. The Old Testament scripture I mention is from 2 Samuel 7, Genesis 12, and Genesis 3. I mentioned some thoughts from the church fathers on Eve and here is one quote:
Saint Irenaeus wrote this between 180-199 A.D.:
“Consequently, then, Mary the Virgin is found to be obedient, saying: “Behold, O Lord, your handmaid; be it done to me according to your word.” Eve, however, was disobedient; and when yet a virgin, she did not obey…. having become disobedient, was made the cause of death for herself and for the whole human race; so also Mary, betrothed to a man but nevertheless still a virgin, being obedient, was made the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race…. Thus, the knot of Eve’s disobedience was loosed by the obedience of Mary. What the virgin Eve had bound in unbelief, the Virgin Mary loosed through faith.”
Against Heresies (3,22,4)

Podcast: Advent week 3

This is the third in the Advent series, “Help is Coming.” This week the reading is from Isaiah 61 and I focus on verses 1-4. The scripture gives a word of hope, especially for those in the midst of despair and darkness.

Podcast: Advent week 2

This is the second in our Advent series: “Help is Coming.” The beginning of the scripture reading was cut off on the audio, so read 2 Peter 3:8-15a. The scripture is about the coming of the Lord and the dissolving of the heavens in fire. There is a key question in the midst of the section – “What sort of person should you be?”  Part of preparing our hearts for the Lord and preparing them for Christmas involves asking these types of questions and basing our lives on Christ’s Lordship.
