Podcast: The Deliverer part 6

This is the sixth and final sermon in the series The Deliverer.  The reading came from Exodus 17:1-7.  There are really two things that we consider in this sermon.  First, we must confront our desire to return to slavery.  Second, we need to celebrate that God brings life out of death and the very things we mean for death God can use in order to bring life.  As a response to this scripture we brought pieces of wood to the front and placed them on a cross.  On the wood we wrote something that we are to be delivered from.

Livin Leviticus Loca part 3

Some tattoos are wrong for reasons other than religious

Alright, so after almost a month I am finally returning to tattoos and Leviticus. Things got busy around the church building – things falling, mold growing, all sorts of fun stuff. Plus this congregation expects a sermon every week. Slave drivers. I’m afraid that I began this jaunt down considering the holiness of tattoos and then left you hanging too long. The four people who read the blog have probably gone out and just covered themselves with tattoos of all kinds without the guidance of their pastor. I’m sorry.
We’ve looked at the Old Testament Law in the last two posts on Leviticus. I’ve shown how the law has been understood by some people as being ceremonial, civil, and moral. I also raised some concerns about this distinction because it isn’t always clear which is which and then one has to wonder why there would be parts of Scripture that seem to serve no purpose. Then I examined the Law from a New Testament standpoint and we saw that at times the law was superseded by Christ and in other times it was made even more challenging. However, I think a good rule of thumb is given by scripture that the two great commandments of love the Lord and love your neighbor hold the key. Continue Reading »

Podcast: The Deliverer part 5

This is the fifth sermon in the Deliverer series. In it we are faced with the question, “Do you trust God?”  The scripture comes from Exodus 16:2-15 and the gospel reading for the day came from Matthew 6, where Jesus teaches the disciples how to pray.  Other scriptures mentioned can be found in 1 Corinthians 10, John 10:10, James 1, and Matthew 7.  At the end of worship we had a video on Compassion International.  You can learn more about their ministry here.

Podcast: The Deliverer part 4

This is the third sermon in the series “The Deliverer.” The scripture comes from Exodus 14. The book on baptismal ceremonies that I mention is called, “The Awe Inspiring Rites of Initiation.“  The scriptures we read aloud were from Romans 6 and 2 Corinthians 5.  What is it in your life that must die in order that new life in Christ can come into being?  Here’s a link to a sweet movie poster that relates to the sermon.

Podcast: The Deliverer Part 3

Here is the third sermon from the series on Exodus called “The Deliverer.” It is on Exodus 12 which is the telling of the first Passover. What do we expect from our rituals in worship? What do you expect from communion? If Christ is present with us, and if communion is a means of receiving God’s grace, than shouldn’t we expect something to happen? Are you ready to be set free?
